Bike-To-Work Tips

Bike to Work Tips from Bike Loop PH

The reduced passenger capacity of our public transport due to the global pandemic just made our daily commute even more difficult than it already is. With this, let’s make it our duty to make cycling our small contribution to lessen the demand on our public transport.

By riding our bikes, we free up public transport and roads for essential and emergency trips only. We also give way for those who are physically unable and those who really can’t afford to get a bike an easier commute.

Remember that every small deed counts. Bike to work if you can.

Below are some tips that can help you in your daily bike-to-work:

1. Get a good quality bike

Think about long term costs. Save yourself from the hassle of frequent bike tuning and repairs that will end up costing more. Consider the distance and terrain of your daily route and make sure that the bike you will purchase can withstand the travel.

2. Plan your route

Most likely than not, the route you take biking to work is different than the one you would take in a car. Research the best and safest bike route that works for you. You can use Google Maps to map out your ride by choosing the bicycle icon on your trip options. Opt for roads with bike lanes and less car traffic.

3. Gear up!

Always wear a helmet and use bright, reflecting clothing. Use brake lights at night and bring a rain jacket in case it rains.

4. Check your bike

Make sure your bike is in a safe, working condition. Make it a habit to check your chain, tires, brakes, cables, and lights before leaving for work. It is also best that you carry with you a tire patch kit and a tire pump or an extra inner tube in case of a tire flat.

5. Be alert

Be 100% aware and prepared for unpredictable moves or mistakes by others, so you can react accordingly. Avoid using earphones or anything that can distract you from the road.

6. Ride defensively

Make eye contact with drivers when crossing intersections and use hand signals when turning. Give an audible signal when passing pedestrians.

7. Get a good quality bike lock

Invest on a quality bike lock to prevent bike theft. Choose a lock that is both secure enough to protect your bike and light and compact enough to use on a daily basis.

Most commuters dread their daily commute; but on a bike, you can enjoy them. As John Burke said,

Cycling is a simple solution to some of the world’s most complicated problems.
